Radical Marketing!

Radical marketing deserves a radical company right? Well I don't think any other company embodies the word radical as a whole better than Red Bull. Yet that is not why I am choosing them to talk about. Yes Red Bull may sponsor extreme athletes at their best and put on events that draw their target audience, but that’s not all radical marketing is about. Radical marketing by definition seems to embody the thought that the company has a small marketing budget. I have to disagree with this.

I feel as though Red Bull probably budgets most of their money to go towards advertising and putting on their own events. That doesn't mean however they aren't part of radical marketing. Red Bull has a program where their custom company cars are driven around the country to pass out free product. I'm sure just about everyone has seen this at one point or another. After installing coolers, custom vinyl and a custom decretive can I am sure the red bull Mini Coopers are worth around $100,000 each. This is a large investment for a company. There are hundreds of these cars all over the US and who knows where else, going to target markets and giving out free product.

Another connection to radical marketing that Red Bull shares is that their Founder/CEO personally meets with any athlete they professionally sponsor. He makes appearances at events and supports them and is always personally involved with any endeavor the company may want to get involved in. Like I said in class he is a little insane but that seems to be the concept of Red Bull, to push things to a limit, or better yet always setting a new limit.

Research blocked by work-time woes

My job seems to have come in the way of my research already, as I was not able to go meet my client last night when it was most convenient for him. He is ready and available for me to talk to him in person. Being that it is the off season he has a little more time so it is not too big of a deal getting ahold of him. So I haven’t really had the opportunity to gather much information. Recently they put up a new website for the shop and with this new site we lost one of my favorite parts of the old site, the story of how the shop came to be. I guess I’ll just have to include that in my interview.

Entity Research: Confirmation

I’ve boiled my list of entities down to one this morning after weighing the amount of personal involvement I have with some of my top well known entities. I’ve chosen to go with Empire Lacrosse in Carmel. The owner has known me since my sophomore year in high school when he coached me and has continued to help me develop IUPUI lacrosse. I have worked with him on a designer level and I think we are at that point in our professional relationship that I won’t be stepping over any lines when the project gets more in depth.

I’m hoping my personal relationship with him will allow him to easily work with him. I also believe that my personal involvement with the local lacrosse community will give me a little deeper look into how things work here in Indianapolis. Being as it’s not a huge community for the sport, in comparison with others, we are on the leading edge of the country with growth. With the growth here in Indianapolis I think this could open some important windows for my entity and I am excited to see where it leads.

VC:3 program research

For the first part of researching a program I chose the Marketing program at Kelly School of Business. I gathered much of my information from their website although I also have a roommate in the program.

Pre-college recruiting

·    Young women's institute

·    Junior executive institute

Other recruiting:

·    Recruiting from other universities

·    recruiting from other business programs

·    International business transfer students

They seem to target highly motivated and intelligent students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. There are also the students that come to the school themselves because they know the prestige of the school.

May of these qualities mirror the VC program here at Herron in one way or another.
